Black History Month Celebration at Cygnet Hospital Beckton

Throughout October, Cygnet Hospital Beckton has been celebrating Black History Month. This year’s theme is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, emphasising the importance of recognising and correcting the stories of black history and culture.

The team held a celebration event which provided a valuable opportunity to learn from the experiences of black colleagues and foster empowerment and connection through shared narratives.

Hospital Manager, Judith Etheridge, inspired the team with a reminder that while history is in the past, focusing on the future and making a positive difference is crucial.

Led by Awa Bah, Clinical Services Manager, attendees participated in #ReclaimingNarratives poetry activities, expressing their beliefs and sharing what Black History Month means to them. It was inspiring.

Attendees grooved to Afro Caribbean music, enjoyed delicious Nigerian jollof rice, chicken, cake, and Gambian Sobo, creating an atmosphere of joy and community.

Florence Ukaegbu, the Wellbeing & Engagement Lead at Cygnet Hospital Beckton said: “I used this opportunity to share my personal reflection on this year’s theme.. Let’s continue to unite in ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, ensuring the true essence of Black history and contributions are recognised.”

Well done to everyone who contributed to making this event a success.
