Flower Arranging sessions a big hit at Cygnet Newham House
Cygnet Newham House is a 20-bed neuropsychiatric care and treatment facility in Middlesbrough providing rehabilitation for women affected by acquired brain injuries (ABI).
Mandy Turner, Activity Co-ordinator, said: “We pick flowers based on the season or relating to a particular theme, for example Roses for Valentine’s Day. At Christmas we made a wreath for the entrance to our home. We forage in the local area for foliage and greenery.
“For the ladies who are unable to make the floral displays independently or with support we use this session as a sensory group. We use touch and smell to allow the ladies to have different experiences and express their likes and dislikes.
“Some of our ladies will keep their floral displays in their bedrooms or give then to friends and relatives when visiting. All of the staff and patients enjoy the displays that we have on the tables in our dining room, in reception or dotted around the unit.
“In the future we hope to be able to make flower arrangements that we can donate to local cafes or places that our ladies like to visit to allow us to be part of the local community.”
