Textiles Project at Beacon House

Many of the people we support in our West Yorkshire residential services have the opportunity to attend the Textiles Project at Beacon House. There they are introduced to a wide range of activities, including embroidery, felt work, knitting, weaving, and making stuffed toys.

Textiles Therapist Mutizwa Rushwaya, said: “Many of the residents have never held a sewing needle or been given the chance to use a sewing machine.

“We find that with guidance and support, they can achieve a good standard of work based on ability. Textiles also offer a chance to socialise with others while listening to music.

“Some of our residents choose to work on colouring books or create their own piece of art using various mediums such as wool, stones, or beads. We feel that, by supporting self-expression, our residents feel empowered and confident to showcase their work.

“Quite often we can encourage participation in those who are reluctant or unsure, even if it’s just stuffing a cushion, this can make a huge difference and give them a sense of accomplishment.”
