Cygnet Kenney House and the Community

At Cygnet, our ethos is centred on doing all we can to make a positive difference to support those with mental health needs. Our services are provided by dedicated, highly skilled staff whose priority is to provide safe care – safe for those entrusted to us and safe for those who live and work in the communities where we are based.

As the need for mental health care is increasing in all parts of the UK, Cygnet is proposing to help meet demand in Oldham by providing a specialist inpatient service for females. We are in the process of renovating a former care home on Wester Hill Road, which we plan to open as Cygnet Kenney House soon. The service is named after Oldham suffragette, Annie Kenney.

Our plan is to provide a place of sanctuary for women suffering with their mental health, a place where wellness is at the forefront. We provide care in a safe and comfortable environment to promote successful recovery.

The people we care for will be someone’s wife, daughter, sister or friend. They may have experienced difficulties leading to a deterioration in their mental health, such as a marriage breakdown or bereavement, but with the right care and support they will want to return to their own lives as soon as possible. With successful treatment, our care aims to understand, stabilise and support people to be able to return to a healthy and fulfilling life.

Cygnet has been providing mental health care in community settings across the country for over 35 years. We have more than 150 care homes, hospitals and residential services in cities, towns and villages across the UK. The vast majority of our services are in community settings or populated areas, where we run our facilities alongside household and business properties. We provide much-needed care in neighbourhoods where schools, nurseries, community centres, shops, parks, offices, and more co-exist together in communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Cygnet: Who We Are

Cygnet is a well-established provider of both Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) and Acute care across the country, with proven outcomes for those entrusted to us.

Cygnet does not take any private patients. We work hard to be a trusted partner to the NHS. We are held to the same regulatory controls and scrutiny as the NHS. Our staff are trained through the same systems as their NHS counterparts and are expected to meet the same high standards.

For the second year running, Cygnet has outperformed the national average in regulatory ratings of services rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ across both health and social care.

The care and treatment we provide across all services is always person-centred and delivered by an expert team who have a wide range of knowledge and skills to ensure the care is of the highest quality and above all, is appropriate, compassionate and safe.

Through the care we provide we support people’s mental health which can also impact on their physical health, relationships, families, job prospects and so much more.

Service Overview

The setting will be designed with wellness in mind.

Our specially trained staff will provide therapeutic support that focuses on improving each individual’s quality of life.

Kenney House will be a 44-bed registered hospital, providing an inpatient service for women with complex mental health. The hospital will be made up of three wards:

  • 1 x Female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit with 12 beds
  • 1 x Female Acute ward with 16 beds
  • 1 x Female Mental Health Rehabilitation with 16 beds

Whilst we understand sometimes people are concerned about individuals requiring mental health care, we can offer our assurance that this is not a place of containment, rather it is a place of sanctuary, focusing on providing appropriate care and treatment to enable those staying there to feel supported and safe.

It will provide a stabilising environment to support individuals to manage their mental health, reinforce daily living skills and prepare for independent life back in the community.

Why have we chosen Cygnet Kenney House location

  • The need for a mental health care facility in this location has come about following an identified local need and through Cygnet’s partnerships with the NHS and Integrated Care Board. There is a shortfall in this service in the authority area.
  • By developing this new service, we will be able to offer a PICU to Acute pathway through the same hospital, meaning a patient could complete their treatment journey within one setting.
  • We hope to offer care that is closer to home for more people and avoid inappropriate, out-of-area placements, far from home, family and friends.
  • Through the services we provide, an individual could complete their treatment journey within one setting, with all care under one roof.
  • This is a former care home with appropriate infrastructure and a layout we can adapt to become a hospital premises. We will be investing to make the site more aesthetically pleasing.
  • The hospital site has capacity to provide a range of rehabilitation services, such as occupational therapy, arts and music therapy, education workshops and group sessions. The setting will also offer space for therapy gardens to provide tranquil and revitalising internal environments.

Our Investment and Our Promise

    • Maintaining good relationships locally is a priority for Cygnet. We are always conscious of our neighbours and their surrounding environment, and are committed to working as a part of the community.
    • We have clear criteria for referrals and any admissions are accepted based on careful assessment, which includes taking account of the local community where we are based.
    • Patients on a PICU will utilise the purpose-built internal courtyards and gardens within the hospital setting, leave outside of the hospital will be escorted by staff once the person has progressed on their treatment journey.
    • For the 16 patients on the acute ward, leave arrangements are only facilitated at the appropriate time in a patient’s treatment plan and with the full oversight and approval of our expert multi-disciplinary team.
    • We do not anticipate anti-social behaviour that could cause concern in the community. We will have a staff team who are on-site, providing support to patients 24/7.
    • Cygnet Kenney House will bring significant employment to the area and we anticipate providing 135 opportunities across a number of roles.
    • We will ensure any works are done with minimal disruption and can offer our assurance that it is an ongoing priority for Cygnet to liaise with our neighbours and the wider health and care community.
    • We are very much part of the communities where we provide services and invest in community initiatives including, but not limited to, sponsorship of children’s sports teams, charity partnerships, community events and social causes.
