Cygnet Sherwood Lodge awarded Outstanding in all five CQC KLOEs

We are delighted to announce that, following a CQC inspection on 11th and 12th March 2019, Cygnet Sherwood Lodge have been awarded ‘Outstanding’ in all five Key Lines of Enquiry (KLOEs) – Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-Led.

Cygnet Sherwood Lodge is a 26 bed specialist high dependency complex care service for men with learning disabilities and other complex needs. The hospital includes a nine bed step-down service, allowing for further community integration and focus on daily living skills.

This amazing result makes Cygnet Sherwood Lodge only the second such service in the country to be awarded all five KLOEs by the CQC. The only other service is Cygnet Elms who achieved a similar feat in July 2018.

The full report (published on the CQC website) highlights many areas of positive practice, including:

  • The service took patients that had already spent a long time in care and enabled them to move into lesser dependant services in a reasonable time frame. This is the aim of Transforming Care.
  • Staff took a proactive approach to anticipating and managing risk to patients. They rarely used restrictive practices.
  • There was a genuinely open culture in which all safety concerns raised by staff and patients were highly valued as being integral to learning and improvement.
  • Staff had a truly holistic approach to assessing, planning and delivering care and treatment to patients.
  • Staff empowered patients to have a voice and to realise their potential. They showed determination and creativity to overcome obstacles to delivering care.
  • Staff were consistent in supporting patients to live healthier lives which included identifying those who needed extra support. There was a targeted and proactive approach to health promotion and prevention of ill-health.
  • There was a compassionate, inclusive and effective leadership at all levels. Leaders demonstrated the high levels of experience, capacity and capability needed to deliver excellent and sustainable care.

“Wow!!! Our aim was to maintain our rating from the previous inspection which gave us 2 outstanding KLOEs, to actually improve on this and get all 5 is absolutely amazing! I’m am incredibly proud of the whole team who work so hard everyday to ensure patient centred care, quality and innovation are at the heart of our service.”Claire Griffiths, Hospital Manager

Congratulations to Claire and the rest of the team at Cygnet Sherwood Lodge for this fantastic achievement – we are so proud to have such an outstanding service in the Cygnet Health Care portfolio.
