Cygnet shortlisted for five awards at the Healthcare Design Awards 2025

Cygnet's Property Design Team

We are delighted to share that three of our new, state-of-the-art hospitals have been shortlisted at the Healthcare Design Awards 2025.

Cygnet have been named finalists in the following categories:

  • Best Architectural Design: Cygnet Hospital Sherwood
  • Best Interior Design: Cygnet Paddocks
  • Best Interior Design: Cygnet Hospital Wolverhampton
  • Best Specialist / Dementia Design: Cygnet Hospital Sherwood
  • Best Acute Design: Cygnet Hospital Wolverhampton

The Healthcare Design Awards recognise innovation and excellence in the design of care facilities.

Our nominations come after we opened four brand new hospitals this year to help meeting the growing demand for mental health care, with more to follow in 2025. Cygnet Hospital Sherwood, a 44-bed PICU and acute hospital for men, opened in January 2024 and was followed by Cygnet Hospital Wolverhampton, a 29-bed hospital for men, in June 2024. Cygnet Paddocks, our new 28-bed specialist Neuropsychiatric service near Widnes, opened in July 2024. We also opened Cygnet Hospital Oldbury in June 2024.

Our hospital designs have been tailored to the people in the care of each particular service. We work closely with our clinical and operational colleagues, developing the interior and building design choices during planning and delivery of projects.

Co-production has been a vital part of our new designs and builds, with the voices of service users and carers being captured and incorporated every step of the way.

Property Director David Turner said: “I am really proud that three of our new hospitals have been recognised as finalists in the Healthcare Design Awards. It is fantastic recognition of the hard work delivered by so many teams to produce care facilities which promote happiness and wellness for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

“Our service users deserve to have healing environments which help with recovery and not hinder. At a time of increased demand for mental health services, we believe that good design is a powerful and cost-effective way of promoting quicker recovery. We recognise the environment is a crucial element in the delivery of positive outcomes for service users, their safety and the safety of staff and the wider community.

“Our new hospitals have all been designed compassionately, with service users at the forefront of decision-making. Their input means we don’t just have buildings which look great, but they are also highly tailored environments to recover in. Our new services provide homely environments which allows for safe, secure care to be delivered, and are places where people can thrive and become the best versions of themselves.”

Feedback from service users and staff about our new hospitals has been positive, with comments including:

  • “This is the best hospital I have ever stayed at. Outdoor space is good, it’s natural. There’s loads of space, I do a lot of pacing. Everyone jokes because it’s like a five star hotel. You get your own shower, en-suite, enough storage. I feel safe here.”
  • “The facilities are beautiful. It’s a home from home.”
  • “It has a really spacious feel, it looks homely and robust. Great to have double beds!”
  • “It doesn’t feel like a hospital, very well thought out. Décor and colours is very calming and tranquil.”
  • “We have a fantastic environment to work in, I think it makes everyone want to look after it. I love the pictures and decoration, it has to be safe but it can still look nice.”

The winners are announced at an awards event on 13th February 2025 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. Congratulations and good luck to our Property Design team!
