Cygnet Wast Hills, rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, is a specialist service for people with autism. Vicky Hazeldine (Deputy Manager) and Hayley Duff (Senior Support Worker) attended the conference to give a presentation on ‘Autism Awareness’.
Vicky and Hayley discussed theories around autism, sensory aspects of autism and how this can affect individuals’ day to day lives. More specifically they looked at health inequalities and difficulties with oral health and strategies on how to improve this for individuals with autism.
The presentation was very well received and included the following feedback:
“We found the presentation really informative. All the way through I was thinking about patients I’ve supported and difficulties and it all makes sense now.”
“It was really interesting, the way sensory needs were explained was really relatable and will definitely help in the future.”
“I have never thought about some of the things you’ve mentioned, especially about how we can support people with autism to reduce anxiety around their appointments.”
This conference was the latest example of the team at Cygnet Wast Hills using their experience to provide autism training in local community and regional events. On this occasion the team asked for their speaker fees to be donated to Autism West Midlands.
Well done to both Vicky and Hayley!
