Forestwood School celebrates its new name

Staff celebrating the new name for Forestwood School

Education staff and colleagues from Cygnet Bury Forestwood came together yesterday to celebrate the renaming of the hospital’s school to Forestwood School.

Formerly known as the Excel and Exceed Centre, the OFSTED registered school is the specialist provider of education for all young people admitted to Cygnet Bury Forestwood. Learning happens in a dedicated school unit which includes an ICT suite, library and quiet room. Teaching is provided by a team of subject specialists and experienced classroom support assistants. The name change to Forestwood School more closely aligns the school with the hospital.

On the day education staff, students and hospital staff celebrated the launch of the new name with cake and fun activities throughout the day. This included making bracelets using the colours from the new logo, a forest / tree themed quiz, hat spinning and even a juggling workshop!

Forestwood School’s Head Teacher, Wendy Webster, said: “Our highly experienced teaching staff at the school and exam centre will continue to provide all students with a good education and a broad curriculum of study and the new name hopes to demonstrate closer links between the clinical journey and educational journey and the importance of both on recovery.

“Each student has a bespoke curriculum which is unique to their need, based on past academic achievement and discussions with their community school. The wider multidisciplinary team at Cygnet Bury Forestwood regularly now bring additional skills into the classroom to support the curriculum and improve the learning outcomes across the whole service.

“Speech and Language have a “need to speak up” annual event, there are weekly collaborative sessions with science and the dietitian discusses healthy eating and body issues. Occupational therapy support attendance intervention work with AQA unit awards being followed in cooking sessions and IT provide presentations for careers and to support the recent Safer Internet Day. Additional collaborative creative projects are in the pipeline for next term, so watch this space.”
