George was initially inspired by a food collection organised by staff for a local Sure Start centre. George said, “I wanted to do something good for the community because times have been hard. I know what it’s like not to have food and stuff. The idea that I could help too just appeared to me and I said let’s do it!”
George decided he wanted to organise donations to the Brighouse Central Foodbank. He helped design and put up posters around the service requesting donations from staff and other service users. He also raised the collection regularly in morning meetings.
The response was really positive and the first delivery of food and toiletries took place just before Christmas. The foodbank were delighted and even posted their thanks to George on social media.
George’s aim is to make regular donations to the foodbank saying, “It’s going to happen every month. Hopefully we can get more each month.” The most recent drop took place on Friday 29th January when George and a member of staff took in the latest donations.
George is keen to do more in the future. He has volunteered to help at the foodbank and hopes to be able to do so when the current lockdown measure have begun to be eased. He is also planning on getting a Food Hygiene Certificate so that he can help more.
Well done George!
