Working with the support of the Occupational Therapy team who have provided the materials, the art work is all his own design and is of a very high quality. From the OT kitchen, communal areas and bathrooms to activity rooms and garden areas his work has added a warm touch to the ward environment.
He said, “These times are hard not just for us patients but for the staff too. Doing artwork during these times has provided me with great therapy as it is something I enjoy. I get transported into my own little world and it helps me forget about the troubles outside.
“This is our home and I feel proud that I can make it look and feel more like a home. Paul and Laura allocate me time on my daily planner, provided me with the paints and materials I need and off I go.”
Due to the high standard of his work the service user was subsequently asked to improve other areas such the hospital’s Recovery College. Occupational Therapy Assistant Paul O’Keefe said, “When I walk past a room where he is painting and hear his radio playing I know he is in his own little world. It is though he isn’t actually in hospital but in a special place only he can describe. It is wonderful to see.”
