Two Cygnet doctors honoured by Royal College of Psychiatrists

Dr Omer Malik and Dr Angela Misra

Congratulations to Cygnet Churchill’s Dr Omer Malik and Dr Angela Misra who have both won prestigious awards from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr Omer Malik has been named Educator of the Year, and Dr Angela Misra was named SAS Doctor of the Year in the Annual Royal College of Psychiatrists London Division Awards.

Celebrating the successes, Dr Jon Van Niekerk, Cygnet’s Group Clinical Director said: “I am immensely proud to extend my heartfelt congratulations to two outstanding doctors of our team at Cygnet Health Care.

“Dr Omer Malik, your recognition as the Educator of the Year is a testament to your unwavering dedication, innovative teaching methods, and the profound impact you have made on colleagues. Your commitment to fostering a learning environment that nurtures future leaders in psychiatry is truly commendable. This prestigious award is a well-deserved acknowledgement of your exceptional contribution to medical education.

“Dr Angela Misra, your accolade as the SAS Doctor of the Year reflects your extraordinary commitment, clinical excellence, and compassionate care. Your dedication to your patients and your tireless efforts in advancing psychiatric practice have not only set a high standard within our organisation but also within the wider medical community. The recognition underscores the remarkable impact you have made in the field of psychiatry as an SAS doctor leader.

“Both of these doctors embody the values and mission of Cygnet Health Care, and your achievements inspire us all to strive for excellence in our respective roles. We are incredibly fortunate to have you as part of our team, and we look forward to celebrating many more of your successes in the future.”

Finalists in the Educator of the Year award will have shown excellence in medical education contributing to the training of medical students and doctors at all stages of their training as well as colleagues in the MDT.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr Omer Malik, Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director, said: “I am truly honoured, privileged and humbled for being awarded this prestigious award by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, in the background of Cygnet being the only private sector being short-listed and there being excellent candidates.

“A seed has the potential to grow into a healthy tree to provide benefits to others, but without the right support it cannot achieve its true potential.

“It is a pleasure working with Dr Angela and belonging to the Cygnet family. I would like to thank the Cygnet Senior Management, Cygnet doctors and fantastic staff at Cygnet Churchill for being ever so supportive, encouraging and helpful. This award is a testament to the wonderful opportunities and support provided at Cygnet Health Care.”

The winner of the Specialist and Associate Specialist (SAS) Doctor award will have shown clinical excellence and exemplary patient care and raised the positive image of psychiatry in London across the rest of medicine and society. As well as being ‘kind, compassionate and respectful’, they will have demonstrated innovation in clinical practice and service development and been a positive role model for the rest of the psychiatric profession.

Dr Angela Misra said: “I am very honoured and humbled to have been awarded this prestigious award by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I am grateful to have the pleasure and privilege of working closely at Cygnet Churchill with exceptional colleagues such as Dr Omer Malik, who are inspiring, compassionate and dedicated in their pursuit for excellence in delivering patient care.”

Dr Suhana Ahmed is Chair of the London Division of the RCPsych. She said: “The London Division would like to thank all those who made a nomination this year. The standard was extremely high and the judges had an exceptionally difficult job to shortlist each category. It is fantastic and rewarding to see the amazing work being undertaken in mental health care services in London.”
